Aerial Bunched Cables (ABC) is a very novel concept for Over Head Power distribution. When compared to the conventional bare conductor over head distribution system. ABC provides higher safety and reliability, lower power losses and ultimate system economy by reducing installation, maintenance and operative cost. This system is ideal for rural distribution and specially attractive for installation in difficult terrains such as hilly areas, forest areas, coastal areas etc.

Aerial Bunched Cables is also considered to be the best choice for power distribution congested urban areas with narrow lanes and by – lanes. In developing urban complex, Aerial Bunched Cables is the better choice because of flexibility for rerouting as demanded by changes in urban development plan.

Applications

ABC can conveniently be used:

  • In theft prone areas
  • As replacement of bare conductors in rural areas, in forest and in other localities like narrow streets where the space is limited
  • As replacement of bare conducts where reliability of supply is of prime importance
  • As replacement of bare lines where high degree of stability of supply voltage is of importance
  • In hilly terrains where cost of erection of overhead lines or under ground cable becomes very high
  • As reinforcement of existing system without increasing voltage
  • For temporary supplies
  • Reduces burning of transformers and maintenance

Advantages

  • Relative immunity to short circuits caused by external forces (wind, fallen branches), unless they abrade the insulation.
  • Can stand in close proximity to trees/buildings and will not generate sparks if touched.
  • Little to no tree trimming necessary
  • Simpler installation, as crossbars and insulators are not required.
  • Ease of erection and stringing, less labor intensive, less construction resources needed.
  • More aesthetically appealing.
  • Can be installed in a narrower right-of-way.
  • At junction poles, insulating bridging wires are needed to connect non-insulated wires at either side. ABC can dispense with one of these splices.
  • Less risk of a neutral-only break from tree or vehicle damage, increasing safety with TNC-s systems.
  • Significantly improved safety for linespersons, particularly when working on live conductors.
  • Electricity theft is made harder, and more obvious to detect.
  • Less required maintenance and necessary inspections of lines.
  • Improved reliability in comparison with both bare conductor overhead systems and underground systems. Insulated conductors prevent accidental contact and supply can be maintained temporarily in the event of a suspension system collapse.
